Migrating Line of Business (LOB) applications


The additional third-party applications that you have installed on SBS 2003 will need to be moved over to SBS 2008 too. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to do that and a call to your provider for those applications will be required. If you have been paying maintenance to these organizations, then upgrades and support for Windows Server 2008 are likely to be covered.

It is important that all applications and data that you want have been migrated before you finish the migration. Once the migration is finished and the SBS 2003 server is removed, recovering information from a backup is significantly harder than from a live system.

While I cannot tell you how to migrate these applications, I can share the following areas to double-check from the vendor.

Platform compatibility

SBS 2008 is based on Windows 2008 x64. Your ISV will need to support the move from a 32-bit Windows 2003 server to a 64-bit Windows 2008 server.
