Leveraging HTML5 features in iPhone Ajax


HTML5 is the recent revision of the HTML standard that is being adopted by modern web browsers. HTML5 got more attention when Apple blocked Flash access on the iPhone and pushed HTML5 as the alternative open solution. Notably, in April 2010, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc. attacked Adobe in an open letter "Thoughts on Flash" and strongly explained the reason for supporting HTML5 in iPhone and iPad. The summary of the open letter is as follows:

  • Flash isn't "open", like advertised

  • H.264 video format is widely supported and that doesn't require Flash

  • Flash is prone to security and performance problems

  • Software decoding of video affects battery life

  • Flash belongs to the old PC era and isn't compatible with touch

  • Relying on Adobe as third-party development tool provider will affect the growth of Apple's platform
