Planning for a Master Data Services installation


Although some parts of the MDS installation process are thankfully just the standard Next, Next, Next as seen in a lot of Microsoft products, the configuration process, carried out using the Configuration Manager, requires some pre-installation planning.

The key areas to consider are:

  • Server topology

  • Database service account

  • Administrator account

We will now examine each of these next.

Server topology

As we discovered in Chapter 2, Master Data Services Overview, Master Data Services requires SQL Server and also Internet Information Services (IIS) in order to function correctly. When planning for the installation, there are two basic server topologies to choose from, namely:

  • Standalone Configuration—IIS and SQL Server installed on the same server

  • Distributed Configuration—IIS and SQL Server installed on separate servers
