Modeling, not configuration management


I hope that the information provided in the previous sections excites you about the possibilities of what you can do with ProVision®. However, you also need to understand its limitations. In your enthusiasm, you might think that it is possible to do more with the tool than is realistic.

I hope that you have gathered, from previous discussions, that it is neither necessary nor desirable to try and make ProVision® the place where all information about a business is stored.

The reasons are both technical and political. From a technical point of view, other applications can manage information far more effectively. A configuration management database (CMDB) is designed to track the lifecycle of every instance of hardware and software. You might have hundreds of laptops, each of which has a unique serial number.
