Product update types


Before we continue, it is important to note that there are several types of product updates. You need to be familiar with the terms used in the maintenance of packages, such as fix packs, features packs, interim fixes, and interim features.

The following table explains the different types of product updates in case you come across these terms on websites, installers, and/or documentation:

Type of update

Description

Release

Essentially, a new product version.

  • A new WebSphere Application Server that includes major new functions, such as V8.0

  • This is a separate installation that can coexist with other Application Server releases

  • Full testing of all applications with a new release is recommended

Fix pack

A product update that fixes defects.

  • This is the standard delivery for updates—it has been regression tested.

  • A fix pack is a cumulative package of fixes, such as Fix Pack 2 (8.0.0.2).

  • Fix packs also install on top of a previous fix pack, such as applying V8.0.0.2 to V8...
