Abstracting your source system

For a business intelligence and data warehouse project, there are normally numerous source systems. All these source systems will have their individual data models and standards. Whether you are connecting to packaged or custom applications, at some time during the lifecycle of the project, these systems will undergo application upgrades. It is important to be able to abstract the business intelligence and data warehouse project from these upgrades so as to minimize the impact, and create a single point of failure.

Getting ready

Identify all your source tables from the Developing the data lineage recipe in Chapter 8, Analyzing the Sources. Obtain usernames and passwords for all the source systems with the necessary privileges. Determine the privileges you have within the source system.

How to do it...

Abstracting your data in the source system gives you a level of flexibility, should the source system or definition for the data change.
