Creating multi-table hierarchies


Hierarchies are not always restricted to a single table and may span across multiple tables. For this reason, OBIEE supports the ability to create hierarchies across multiple tables.

Getting ready

In the BI Administration tool, ensure all the source tables are imported and are joined together correctly.

How to do it...

In many cases, hierarchies may span across multiple tables. OBIEE has the capability to create hierarchies across multiple tables, thus reducing the need to create additional physical objects:

  1. 1. Ensure there are joins between the tables you wish to create a hierarchy upon. These should be inner joins.

  2. 2. In the Business Model and Mapping layer, create a new logical table and base it on a single table:

  3. 3. Select the Sources table and edit the source by clicking on the pencil icon. Click on the plus icon, and select the additional sources for the logical table. Only sources with Joins will be visible:
