Operating System Deployment


Whenever you want to deploy a new operating system into your organization, whether it is small or large, it is a large process that can cause implications. You have to properly plan and execute the move to your new operating system so that it minimizes the extra work, business continuity, upset users, and data loss. Beginning with Configuration Manager 2007, a new feature was introduced called Operating System Deployment (OSD). In the newest edition of Configuration Manager, the 2012 R2 version, this functionality has improved greatly.

OSD is a whole process to deploy operating systems to new or existing machines. As there is an example of a Windows 8.1 deployment at the end of the section, from now on, I will use Windows 8.1 as a term when referring to an operating system.
