This is an important chapter. Esri's official launch of ArcGIS Online in 2012 heralded a new approach to publishing, accessing, and purchasing ArcGIS services. Using a subscription-based model, ArcGIS Online has made the sharing and managing of geodata considerably easier. Mobile application developers need to understand ArcGIS Online. Authentication, users, groups and webmaps are key concepts. We will discuss these concepts in greater depth in this chapter, and illustrate by building a mobile ArcGIS Online application.
