Chapter 8. Introducing Microsoft Power BI

So far we've built Dashboards in Excel, and we've built Financial Statements (and tables) using Jet Express for GP. Now, we will review one of the coolest new Microsoft products since slicedbread. No kidding. A couple of years ago, Microsoft introduced a cool new product, a dashboarding tool called Power BI. This tool can be used on your computer (desktop), in the cloud (service), and even on your iPad or phone (mobile).

We will review some of the basics about the product itself. Understanding these fundamentals can help in planning where and how you should and could implement. In this chapter, we'll cover the following topics:

  • Power BI Desktop versus Service versus Mobile

  • Power BI Professional (paid) versus Power BI (free)

  • Typical workflow of Power BI

  • Update speed
