Advanced backup techniques are often required when any environment has a large amount of content or the recovery service level agreements are of a short time frame.
In large environments with content databases that are over a TB, daily full farm backups could take more than 10 hours. Imagine receiving backup failures during full backups; it would take more than 20 hours to have a successful backup.
