Q: So where do I start with governance?


A: Good question. First, remember that governance is a continuing process and not a "one-shot deal", where a great deal of documentation is produced, reviewed, and updated. Where to start does depend on your current SharePoint strategy, as discussed in the previous chapter. If your organization is new to SharePoint, we suggest that you identify the most basic areas that are required to be governed, such as:

  • IT — service level agreements, enterprise applications, application owners, budgets, and database management

  • Internal/external end users in terms of security and training

  • Development — release policies, technical documentation, and support

  • Infrastructure — backup and restore procedures, server names, and authentication

  • Training

  • Security — who can edit content and make changes to infrastructure
