Asynchronous programming


Asynchronous programming is a technique we can use to execute computationally heavy or I/O-heavy tasks that might normally block our application, such as making a request of a web service or performing expensive file I/O. These tasks can be sent to an independent thread until they have completed. While these expensive operations execute in the background, the application can go about servicing the needs of the user.

Most frameworks provide a mechanism to either await the completion of some task that has been queued for background execution or to provide a callback to be invoked when a background task is complete. The .NET framework is no different and, in Version 4.0, asynchronous programming was greatly simplified with the introduction of the Task Parallel Library (TPL).
