Overview of this book

RabbitMQ is an open source message broker software (sometimes called message-oriented middleware) that implements the Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP). The RabbitMQ server is written in the Erlang programming language and is built on the Open Telecom Platform framework for clustering and failover. Messaging enables software applications to connect and scale. Applications can connect to each other as components of a larger application or to user devices and data. Dealing with load spikes and resource optimization in the cloud


Until now we have seen how to scale a RabbitMQ cluster manually, but in some cases it's necessary to automate this process. A typical use case is to manage load spikes automatically.

In this recipe we will see how to create an auto-scaling RabbitMQ cluster using AWS auto-scaling (http://aws.amazon.com/autoscaling/). Currently, AWS auto-scaling is only available using AWS command-line tools. In this recipe we have used AWS Java command-line tools (http://aws.amazon.com/developertools/351).

Getting ready

To run this recipe you will need to create a VPC, as we have seen in the Creating a cluster with two EC2 instances recipe, avoiding adding any machine to it. Then, you need an EC2 master image similar to the one created...
