Q: Is it worth hiring a consulting firm to create your company's governance documentation?


A: The authors of this book are all consultants within the SharePoint industry, and all agree the answer to the question in most cases is "No…Not to do all the work". The only result is that you simply end up outsourcing the problem to a third party.

One of the problems with hiring a consulting firm is that you are paying for them to produce the documentation, rather than taking the time and effort to understand your own business. Understanding the business would be part of the consulting engagement; but ultimately for governance to work, someone within the organization needs to take ownership of the policies and make sure they are workable, and that IT, the businesses, and users adhere to them. This is an ongoing process and should be a continuing process long after the consultants have gone.
