Q: Which edition of SharePoint is right for me?

A: SharePoint is currently a fourth-generation product and, as such, has gone through quite a few name and edition changes over the years. In its last incarnation, the two general variants of the platform were referred to as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) and Windows SharePoint Services v3 (WSSv3). The newest release, SharePoint 2010 comes in a variety of new flavors, and it is essential that you understand the differences between the editions and what each edition offers. The SharePoint editions expose different feature sets, so you need to know what features you are interested in offering to your user base.

SharePoint comes in three main editions, and the feature sets are cumulative:

  • SharePoint Foundation

  • SharePoint Server 2010 Standard

  • SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise

    Note

The different SharePoint 2010 editions also require different licenses, so determining your optimal configuration early will save you time and headache...
