Downloading an SSRS report in Excel and as a PDF

This recipe shows you how to download an SSRS report in Excel and PDF format.

Getting ready

In previous versions of SSRS, the ReportViewer redistributable was a separate download and this needed to be installed on your machine prior to following this recipe. As of SSRS 2014, the Report Viewer 2014 runtime is part of the SSDT-BI installation. At the time of writing, SSDT-BI for SQL Server 2014 and Visual Studio 2013 can be found at https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt204009.aspx.

After installing the ReportViewer control, select a report that you wish to download as an Excel or PDF version.

This recipe demonstrates how to download a report published to a local Report Server and export it to Excel and as a PDF. The report is in the /Customer Reports/Customer List path. Alternatively, choose a report you wish to download and replace the $reportViewer.ServerReport.ReportPath variable with the report path in your environment.
