Overview of this book

Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) 12c is packed full of features and has a fresh approach to information presentation, system management, and security. OBIEE can help any organization to understand its data, to make useful information from data, and to ensure decision-making is supported by facts. OBIEE can focus on information that needs action, alerting users when conditions are met. OBIEE can be used for data analysis, form production, dashoarding, and workflow processes. We will introduce you to OBIEE features and provide a step-by-step guide to build a complete system from scratch. With this guide, you will be equipped with a good basic understanding of what the product contains, how to install and configure it, and how to create effective Business Intelligence. This book contains the necessary information for a beginner to create a high-performance OBIEE 12c system. This book is also a guide that explains how to use an existing OBIEE 12c system, and shows end users how to create.

System requirements

For a full list of system requirements, hardware, software, operating systems, and so on, see the following guide: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/ias/downloads/fusion-certification-100350.html.

Here's a quick checklist of items before you get started installing and configuring OBIEE:

  1. Has the RCU been run to create the OBIEE 12c required database repositories?

  2. Is the database running?

  3. Do you have sufficient privileges to install the software (such as administrator privileges on the machine)?

  4. Have you downloaded the correct operating-system binary files for OBIEE 12c?

  5. Is your machine using DHCP or does it have a static IP address?

    Note

The instructions in this chapter are for a static IP. If you are using DHCP, you'll need to install a Loopback Adapter. For instructions on installing the Loopback Adapter, see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708322(WS.10).aspx.

During installation on a Windows OS, it is best practice to use the command prompt to access the folder structure and executable files for each part of the installation and configuration. Be sure to use the right-click function to execute the executable files using the Run as administrator option.
