Overview of this book

If you are looking to build data science models that are good for production, Java has come to the rescue. With the aid of strong libraries such as MLlib, Weka, DL4j, and more, you can efficiently perform all the data science tasks you need to. This unique book provides modern recipes to solve your common and not-so-common data science-related problems. We start with recipes to help you obtain, clean, index, and search data. Then you will learn a variety of techniques to analyze, learn from, and retrieve information from data. You will also understand how to handle big data, learn deeply from data, and visualize data. Finally, you will work through unique recipes that solve your problems while taking data science to production, writing distributed data science applications, and much more - things that will come in handy at work.

Plotting histograms

Histograms are a very popular method of discovering the frequency distribution of a set of continuous data. In a histogram, data scientists usually show the quantitative variable along the x axis and frequency of that variable along the y axis. A few key features of histograms that make it very useful are as follows:

  • Only numerical data can be plotted

  • Huge datasets can easily be plotted

  • The x axis is usually used as bins or intervals of quantitative variables

  • In this recipe, we will see how to plot histograms using GRAL

Getting ready

  1. To use GRAL to plot histograms, we need the example applications provided with the library in the form of Jar files. These example applications can be downloaded from http://trac.erichseifert.de/gral/wiki/Download. Download the gral-examples-0.10.zip file from the download location to your local disk. Extract the files:

  2. Once you download the Zip file and extract it, you will see a directory structure as follows, where our folder of interest is...
