Overview of this book

Talend Open Studio for Data Integration (TOS) is an open source graphical development environment for creating custom integrations between systems. It comes with over 600 pre-built connectors that make it quick and easy to connect databases, transform files, load data, move, copy and rename files and connect individual components in order to define complex integration processes. "Getting Started with Talend Open Studio for Data Integration" illustrates common uses and scenarios in a simple, practical manner and, building on knowledge as the book progresses, works towards more complex integration solutions. TOS is a code generator and so does a lot of the "heavy lifting"ù for you. As such, it is a suitable tool for experienced developers and non-developers alike. A simple subjob


We will begin with a simple subjob example. Our integration scenario is as follows:

  • We want to extract data from a database to a delimited file

  • We need to zip the file to archive it

We will use the same database that we used for the integration examples in Chapter 4, Working with Databases. Let's build the subjob by performing the following steps:

  1. Create a new job and name it SimpleSubjob.

  2. We will extract data from the order_lines table, so expand the DEMO_DB 0.1 metadata connection (in the Repository window) to reveal the Table Schemas.

  3. Click on the order_lines table and drag it onto the Job Designer. Select tMySQLInput from the pop-up window.

  4. Search for delimited in the Palette window and drop a tFileOutputDelimited component onto the Job Designer.

  5. Connect the two components by right-clicking on the MySQL Input component, selecting Row | Main, and dropping the resulting connector onto the delimited output component. We have formed our first subjob!
