Creating a connection and using substitution variables in financial reports

In this recipe, we will create three substitution variables, create a database connection to the sample basic database, and use our substitution variables in our report. Using substitution variables will allow us to change a report or set of reports quickly without having to manually modify multiple reports when we need to change default member selections. In addition, substitution variables can be easily automated, which allows us to schedule these changes.

Getting ready

To get started, click on the Start menu and navigate to Programs | Oracle EPM System | Essbase | Essbase Administration Services | Start Administration Services Console. In the Log in menu, enter your Administration Server, Username, Password, and click on the Log in button.
