The string type is the most common and useful data type in programming languages and applications. It is also the fundamental data type of Redis, in which all keys must be strings. This recipe demonstrates the basic commands to manipulate strings in Redis.
You need to finish the installation of the Redis Server, as we described in the Downloading and installing Redis recipe in Chapter 1, Getting Started with Redis, and connect to the Redis Server by redis-cli
.
To understand how to use the string data type, take the following steps:
- Open a Terminal and connect to Redis with
redis-cli
. - To associate a string value to a key, use the
SET
command. In Relp, we can use the restaurant name as the key and its address as the value; for example, if we would like to set the address for the restaurant"Extreme Pizza"
:
127.0.0.1:6379> SET "Extreme Pizza" "300 Broadway, New York, NY"
OK
- String values can be retrieved by simply using the
GET
command:
127...
