Overview of this book

PostgreSQL is a rock-solid, scalable, and safe enterprise-level relational database. With a broad range of features and stability, it is ever increasing in popularity.This book shows you how to take advantage of PostgreSQL 11 features for server-side programming. Server-side programming enables strong data encapsulation and coherence. The book begins with the importance of server-side programming and explains the risks of leaving all the checks outside the database. To build your capabilities further, you will learn how to write stored procedures, both functions and the new PostgreSQL 11 procedures, and create triggers to perform encapsulation and maintain data consistency. You will also learn how to produce extensions, the easiest way to package your programs for easy and solid deployment on different PostgreSQL installations.

Adding an object to an existing extension

The ALTER EXTENSION command allows for the dynamic addition of a database object to an existing extension. For instance, suppose you want the playlist table to be part of the pg11ssp extension. You can issue ALTER EXTENSION to add this table to the extension. The result will be that the table will be managed with all the other extension objects, so if you remove the extension, then the playlist table will also be removed. Similarly, the table will disappear from the regular database backup, as it is now part of the extension, unless you configure the backup for the table, as shown in the previous section. The following command ties the playlist table to the pg11ssp extension:

testdb=> ALTER EXTENSION pg11ssp ADD TABLE playlist;

On the other hand, it is possible to untie an object from an extension. For instance, if you want the packt...
