Introducing the Data Recovery Advisor


Recovery from media failures can be a tricky process; it requires a thorough knowledge of the topics we cover in the next two chapters, as well as a good deal of practice. In order to simplify the process of recovery, Oracle introduced the Data Recovery Advisor , (DRA). The DRA is a facility to diagnose problems related to database recovery and advise the DBA on the necessary steps to solve them. It is specific to situations where a backup can be used to recover a database; thus it cannot assist a DBA with user failures or when no backup exists. Furthermore, it does not currently support advanced database features such as Real Application Clusters and standby databases with Data Guard. However, the DRA can be very useful in media failure situations such as the loss, corruption, or accidental renaming of datafiles. The DRA can be invoked using RMAN or Enterprise Manager.
