Setting database initialization parameters


In Chapter 3, Creating the Oracle Database, we introduced the concept of database initialization parameters. We said that these parameters can be used to control nearly every aspect of database operations. In this section, we examine the concept of the parameter file and learn how to change initialization parameters.

Understanding the PFILE and SPFILE

During the process of creating our database in Chapter 3, Creating the Oracle Database, we were presented with the following screen:

As the title of this window, All Initialization Parameters, would suggest, we use this screen to define the initialization parameters that control the inner-workings of the database. Although it happened without our knowledge at the time, these parameters, including any changes we made, were written out to a file called a parameter file. This is the file that holds all of the individual parameters that control our database. There are two types of parameter files available...
