Understanding database registration


In our section on the listener.ora configuration file, we noted that the database SID was the only one of the four pieces of information needed to establish a connection that was missing. Prior to the latest versions of Oracle, it was necessary to explicitly declare, or register, the database name in the listener. In more recent versions, Oracle allows this process of registration to occur dynamically. In this section, we'll look at both types of database registration.

Using static registration

Static registration involves explicitly registering a database SID with a listener. When using static registration, we declare the SID in the listener.ora file in the SID_LIST_LISTENER section, as shown in the following screenshot:
