Chapter 3. Building Sponsorship for the Change

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • List the four main sponsorship groups

  • Define the characteristics of each group

  • Develop ways to work with each group

  • Create a sponsorship plan

When you look at the Pillars of Change, as shown in the following figure, you'll notice that Sponsorship isn't actually a pillar. It is the foundation of the entire change program. Sponsorship is the support required to make the adoption of the change a success.

In this chapter, we'll be looking at four groups whose sponsorship and support is important to the successful adoption of the change. Depending on the size and type of your project, you may only have one or two of these groups, or all four. You can build the sponsorship groups that are right for your organization and the change you are aiming for.

  • Steering committee

  • Executive sponsors

  • Change agents

  • Super users
