Applying your skills day after day

The skills that we looked at in Chapter 2, Mediator Skill Set, are key skills that will not only be useful to you in a mediation; they will also improve your people management skills and engagement with team members. We will look at each of the skills we examined in Chapter 2, Mediator Skill Set, and explore how these can impact on your leadership and management abilities:

  • Listening skills: Learning how to really listen to your staff is important. If you listen empathetically, your understanding of the individuals in your team will be greatly enhanced. You will begin to understand what motivates them, appreciate their communication and learning styles, how they interact with others in the team, what is important to them, and what personal issues may be impacting on their work. You will also be able to spot any changes to their behaviour which may be an indication of a problem. This does take time and it is something that often gets missed by busy managers...
