Mastering SOLIDWORKS Sheet Metal

By: Johno Ellison

Overview of this book

SOLIDWORKS© is the premier software choice for 3D engineering and product design applications across a wide range of industries, and the Sheet Metal module forms an important part of this powerful program. This book will help you to understand exactly what Sheet Metal is, why it is used, and how you can make the most of this fundamental design feature. You’ll start by understanding the basic tools, including Base Flanges and Sketched Bends, before moving on to more complex features such as Custom Forming Tools and Lofted Bends. The book covers all the necessary tools in a step-by-step manner and shares practical manufacturing tips and tricks that will allow you to apply the skills that you learn to real-world situations. By the end of this SOLIDWORKS book, you’ll have understood how to make the best use of SOLIDWORKS Sheet Metal tools and be able to create a whole range of 3D models and designs confidently.

Adding Tab and Slot features

So far in this book, we have only created Sheet Metal parts that contain one single sheet. However, it is also possible to make parts that have multiple sheets.

In SolidWorks Sheet Metal, sheets can be thought of in a similar way to bodies in normal solid modeling. They are separate solids within a model that aren't connected to each other. They may be touching, but they are still separate solids.

An example of a Sheet Metal model with multiple sheets might be an enclosure that is made from two sections—a Body (the first sheet) and a separate Lid (the second sheet). Although both the Lid and the Body are made within one single SolidWorks part document, they are both separate elements within that part.

The Tab and Slot tool is a great way of connecting two of these sheets together. It cuts slots from one sheet and adds corresponding tabs to the other, allowing the two sheets to mesh together and making it easier to create a join like...
