The New Engineering Game

By: Tim Weilkiens

Overview of this book

Organizations today face an increasingly complex and dynamic environment, whatever their market. This change requires new systems that are built on the foundation of a new kind of engineering and thinking. The New Engineering Game closes the gap between high-level reflections about digitalization and daily engineering methods and tools. The book begins by describing the first three industrial revolutions and their consequences, and by predicting the fourth industrial revolution. Considering the fourth industrial revolution, it explains the need for a new kind of engineering. The later chapters of the book provide valuable principles, patterns, methods, and tools that engineering organizations can learn and use to succeed on the playfield of digitalization. By the end of the book, you’ll have all the information you need to understand the various concepts to take your first steps towards the world of digitalization.

Tools for the New Engineering Game

There is no silver bullet for mastering the challenges outlined in the previous chapters. The best strategy largely depends on your specific business and target market. It is strongly recommended that you have a toolbox filled with principles, patterns, methods, and more to enable you to take the correct action.

Processes do not work well on the new engineering playing field. They can only cover known events and scenarios. However, the unknown is now the order of the day.

This chapter provides a toolbox for the systems engineering organization and people to master the challenges of digitalization.

The first section focuses on organizational aspects, while the second section focuses on tools for engineering tasks.

In the first section, Conway's Turtles and Rabbits, you learn about the high-level strategy Turtle and Rabbit of Conway's Law (see Conway's Law from Chapter 3, The Context of the New Engineering Game).
