Typically, when we first cut together a sequence, all the transitions (cuts) between shots are straight. What this means is that both the image and sound from each segment (shot) cut to the next shot at the same time. However, much of the time we don't want straight cuts. Instead, very often you'll want the picture and audio from a shot to cut at different times. Sometimes, you'll want the picture to change to the next shot before its audio does, and vice versa. You'll frequently hear these types of cuts referred to as an L cut, a Prelap , a Postlap , a Split Edit or, more simply, a Split.

This book focuses on providing recipes – specific procedures that can be detailed in a step-by-step fashion. However, there is a large amount of important and/or helpful supporting information and additional editing methods/techniques that do not fall into the step-by step-format.
