Exercise – Could you have dealt better with a past reprimand?

As with all knowledge, the key to turning it into a repeatable skill is practice:

  1. Cast your mind back and identify a time when you would like to have corrected someone's behavior but you didn't feel ready or equipped to do so.

  2. With the incident in mind, work through each stage of the DESC model.

  3. Using the following table, note down in the spaces what you would like to have said.

Note

Tip

Obviously, written and spoken English are subtly different, but don't be too concerned about how it would sound if read out. The important thing is for you to internalize the structure of the model so that you can use it spontaneously when the need arises.
