Before you go to a networking meeting


We've been talking about networking at a high level so far—we've discussed the purpose of networking meetings, types of networking meetings, and some networking strategy. Now it's time to actually participate in the networking meeting.

The type of meeting you attend can help you choose your strategy. Going to a networking meeting doesn't mean you have to ask for something. But it might be helpful to think about the possibilities. Here are a few situations I've been exposed to:

  • At a group networking meeting:

    • You meet someone new and decide to schedule an individual meeting or synergy call to learn more about them.

    • You see someone you haven't seen in ages and decide to set up a call or meeting to catch up.

    • I've also seen current or past clients at group networking meetings. We'll say hello, and they'll ask me to give them a call after the meeting regarding a new project.

  • At individual meetings:

    • Someone asks for your help to find a job or supply some information...
