Design thinking approach


A typical problem-solving approach would address the following:

  • What is the problem at hand?

  • Who are the stakeholders or users?

  • What are the stakeholder or user expectations?

  • What are the possible solutions to address the problem?

  • What is the best solution out of the varied alternates?

  • How should I go about implementing the solution?

  • How do I measure the success of an implementation?

While design thinking would also attempt to solve the problem addressing those questions, it would implode the power of divergent thinking by following human-centered approach to problem solving. In most cases, the problems that are being solved by design thinking are wicked problems that do not have a well-defined problem statement and readily tangible solutions.

This is where divergent thinking comes into the foreground. Divergent thinking offers varied perspectives to the problem at hand, gathered from diverse sources. By sourcing innumerable ideas, the prime focus is that of quantity. When...
