In 1965, Bruce Tuckman published his research on group dynamics and team development. The four phases of team development are Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing. Here's a brief description of what happens during each phase:

  • Forming is the phase where the team gets to know each other and the group learns about the task they've been brought together to accomplish.

  • Storming is a period of conflict every team goes through. It's a healthy and necessary part of team development. The group learns how to deal with internal conflict and differences of opinion. It is possible that a group cannot effectively move past this stage.

  • Norming is when the team comes together to work on the assigned task. At this point, the group is considered a functional group.

  • Performing takes the group beyond a normal functioning team. In this stage, the group is considered high performing. They have a common goal that guides their activity. The group members have been trained and demonstrate...
