After the networking meeting


Even when there are no follow-up items from a networking meeting, it's important to follow-up. This sends the message to the person you just met with that their time and expertise were important. It lets them know that you value them and their time.

Following-up

I mentioned in the previous section that I like to use social networks to stay in touchwith former colleagues. Another good use of social networks is staying in touch with new connections.

Let's say you meet someone at a networking event. If you'd like to stay in touch with them, when you swap business cards, ask if you can stay in touch via LinkedIn, or follow up after the event with a LinkedIn connection request and personalized note like Great meeting you at the ABC event this week. I enjoyed our conversation and would like to stay in touch.

Be forewarned. Some individuals will not connect with acquaintances on LinkedIn. That is their prerogative. Most individuals who are trying to build their network...
