Modeling for realistic highlights in interior scenes


Here is one final section on a very important trick for interior and close-up scenes. If you are modeling your scene aiming at photorealistic presentation, you need to read this bit for instant added realism!

What's the problem with sharp edges?

If you model the basic shape of the box, as shown in the following screenshot, and do not add some natural imperfections to the edges, you'll obtain something flat and lifeless as the following screenshot, no matter how good your rendering skills are:

In real life, light reflects at corners and edges because they are always slightly rounded or chamfered. Even the edge of a knife has some imperfections if you look closely enough. So, if you're modeling anything for a close-up view, you need to add in this edge detail. In the following screenshot, you can see the same box with some tiny chamfers at the edges.
