Using FCPX's auto audio enhancements


It is said that there are two certainties in life—death and taxes. Except if you're a video editor, then there are three—death, taxes, and bad audio. We have all encountered or will encounter bad audio and nothing can be more frustrating to try and fix. FCPX gives us a few automatic quick fix options to try and clean up a few common bad-audio scenarios, such as balancing clips with both loud and quiet moments, removing background noise, and removing hums.

Getting ready

Obviously, this exercise is a bit challenging if you only have a clean audio to work with at the moment.

How to do it...

  1. 1. Highlight a clip in your event with any of the following audio issues—the audio is unbalanced within the clip (that is, very loud and very quiet parts), the audio has background noise, or the audio has a hum caused by an electrical signal at 50 or 60 Hz (common if there was a power cable overlaying an XLR cable when the video was shot).
