Getting to a win-win


Negotiate stems from the root word negotiari. This Latin word means to carry on business. This is important to keep in mind because negotiations can often be perceived in a negative light as being combative or someone surrendering to something. But most negotiations require us needing to continue to work with a customer, co-worker, manager, or employee.

It is not about "how can I get everything I want." It is about reaching an agreement that is mutually satisfactory to be able to continue to be in that relationship.

Most introverts are known to be more cooperative than assertive, which can firm up the win-win approach, but we can also learn some subtle approaches to negotiations from extroverts to ramp up our negotiating skills.
