Thoughts to contemplate

Introversion is not an all or nothing trait. Neither is negotiating solely dependent on this one trait. Because each of us falls on a continuum of introversion to extroversion, we can choose to adjust and bring in the necessary more effective introvert and extrovert traits as negotiating ebbs and flows.

  • How comfortable am I negotiating in everyday situations with people outside of work? If I am effective, can I find what to bring into work that I do well?

  • Can I put personalities aside and focus on the issues to search for agreement?

  • In preparing for a negotiation, do you use a win-win approach?

Negotiating successfully happens when we collaborate so that all parties walk away with a mutually beneficial agreement. It is a leveling of various skills, some of which introverts are naturally predisposed to and some of which we have to be willing to learn, practice, and apply. Negotiating can be learned.
