Back in the New York office on Thursday morning, I wrote a summary of my Toronto visit for Lucy and emailed it to her. She immediately replied with a thank-you email and promised to talk to me later, when she had read it.
At 4:45 P.M., I went to Lucy’s office as instructed, ahead of the meeting with Michael. I had not prepared anything, as I had no idea why he had asked to see me again.
“What have you got for Michael?” asked Lucy.
I trusted her enough to admit that I had nothing, as nobody had informed me of the meeting’s objective. As I said it, I realized that I could have asked for the objective, or even drafted one myself. For a moment I was nervous that she would be expecting me to have something ready, so I was equally relieved when Lucy said that she didn’t know what Michael wanted, either.
“Let’s go,” she said, and headed for the elevator.
