Data at rest is data that is physically stored on disks, tapes, solid-state drives, and other storage media. There are two vulnerabilities here: The data can be accessed, deleted, or modified by someone who doesn’t have proper access rights, or the data may be copied to removable media. The way to address these vulnerabilities is through encryption of data at rest.
