Summary

In this chapter, we looked at the transformation of service management toward cloud. This far-reaching transformation affects established roles, processes, technologies, and culture. Based on our experience interacting with clients, we provided examples for each of these aspects.

We described the impact of this transformation to important operational processes such as Incident Management, Root-Cause Analysis, Deployment, and Release Management and discussed the underlying principles and capabilities.

When we discussed future roles, we provided some thoughts on how a future organization may combine and align the two approaches of DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering.

While all these changes may be quite disruptive to the traditional ITIL-oriented operations organization, it is important to remember that both approaches are accomplishing the same goals: Deliver reliable services to the users at justifiable costs.
