Before iCloud, users needed to plug in their iOS devices to the computer just for backing up devices via USB cable. iTunes helps you to back up data on your device, for example, contacts, purchased content, photos and videos in Camera Roll, and all your personal configurations. iTunes also helps you restore the previous backup to the device.

Now, PC-free (introduced in iOS 5) and iCloud features eliminate the need to use a USB cable in order to backup and restore. Since PC-free eliminates the need to use a cable to back up and restore your devices to the computer, for which you can just use a Wi-Fi connection, iCloud lets you do backup and restoration to the cloud using any connection available, anytime and anywhere. With the free 5 GB storage on iCloud, you can use it to store your iOS device's backup contents. Even now you can back up your device to iCloud, it's still possible to perform a local backup process with iTunes.
