Chapter 4. Replacing a Microsoft Windows Active Directory Server

This chapter is intended to show how to replace a Microsoft Windows Server AD (such as Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012) with a Samba 4 Active Directory Server, and thus, we will cover the following points:

  • The key consideration points we need to keep in mind when planning such a task, and the common concerns one may have before replacing an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC).

  • Our example environment will comprise a standalone AD DC, but if you apply the techniques shown in this chapter in an environment with more than one AD DC, you should be able to adapt the procedure with just a few changes.

  • After we have covered all the key points, and some backup/recovery and rollback techniques have been considered, we will go to the planning phase with examples and tests to actually validate our final replacement procedure.
