In this chapter, we learned about the main difference between the Samba Server Version 3 and 4, how to plan and execute an upgrade procedure of the Samba Server, and a step-by-step process to test and validate the upgrade as well. Using the command-line examples and scripts, we showed you how to gather important information from the Samba 3 environment and how to use that information to compare it with the upgraded system and be sure that the transition from Samba 3 to 4 was successful.

A very detailed Samba 3 example scenario was presented with three Samba 3 Servers playing different roles on the network. So, we showed you how to execute a staged upgrade, discussing the benefits of having different servers for different sets of services and providing flexibility to manage the maintenance window, which is very useful for real use cases.
