Chapter 7. Monitoring Virtual Machines

In this chapter, we will discover how vSphere administrators can monitor the resource usage of different inventory objects. It is important to monitor the vSphere infrastructure to determine if there is a resource bottleneck or if a virtual machine or ESXi host is experiencing constraint. There are many tools that are available within vSphere that can assist VMware administrators to monitor resources and detect any potential bottlenecks. Both esxtop and performance charts are natively available within vSphere for monitoring. Alarms may also be configured to alert administrators when specific events occur or when thresholds are exceeded.

In this chapter, you will learn to:

  • Use performance charts

  • Use esxtop

  • Configure condition-based alarms

  • Configure event-based alarm
