Chapter 4. What is SAM?

It's hard to explain why Software asset management (SAM) is so laborious, tough, onerous, burdensome, demanding, difficult and why it requires so much effort and why it takes so long to get perfect results. One, it will never be perfect. It's on going, constant change, which is why it must be actively managed, controlled, supported, and communicated within your enterprise. SAM is not just having a list of software discovered in your enterprise or comparing purchased licenses with installed software. Once, you realize that, you start to understand the complexity which we will cover in this chapter.
