About the Reviewer

Jørgen van der Meulen is a Nagios Certified Administrator with over eleven years of experience deploying Nagios monitoring for customers. He works for Conclusion Xforce as Solutions Consultant and his main focus is helping customers implement Nagios XI, Nagios Log Server, or Nagios Network Analyzer.

Besides monitoring his main areas of expertise are Linux, Unix, virtualization and networking. Jørgen started his professional career as HP-UX System Administrator in 1995 after becoming enthusiastic about the power of Unix commands. He started to write scripts to automate his recurring tasks on the HP-UX platform and also developed skills in networking, databases, and the Microsoft Windows platform as well. Over the years he had different roles including Systems Administrator, Network Administrator, Database Administrator, Middleware Specialist, Manager Systems Support, Product Manager and Project Manager.

The knowledge he gained from being a sysadmin who likes to automate his work has proven to be very useful for a consultant in the field of monitoring operating systems, networks, applications, and even business processes.  Monitoring the proper parts of a business critical ICT environment can be quite a challenge, especially with regards to keeping monitoring configurations manageable and easy to maintain.

His advice to people who would like to become a monitoring professional would be: first, become a sysadmin or application admin. Struggle with the implementing, deploying, tuning, and administration aspects and learn to enjoy it. Then use your sysadmin/application admin knowledge for setting up monitoring, dealing with best practices with regards to tuning and availability. In the end, the answer to the question "What should I monitor?" will be an easy one.

In his spare time, Jørgen contributes to various open source projects, enjoys art and culture and spending time with his family (wife and two kids).
