Chapter 6. Putting Databases in the Cloud
There are many options to choose from while making the decision to migrate an application based on Microsoft technologies to the Amazon cloud. More than likely, the current database will be SQL Server or Oracle. Initially, it makes sense to keep the infrastructure the same and minimize the changes and disruption caused by migrating an application to AWS, so the first part of this chapter deals exclusively with Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle. However, there are long-term benefits in looking at other database options and technology that could be used to complement your application.
In this chapter, we will look at not only using the existing vendor-specific AMIs to provide database services, but also at the services provided by Amazon directly, such as SimpleDB and the Relational Database Service (RDS).
